Uganda to Host Its Inaugural E-Mobility Expo
On August 16, 2024, Uganda will host its inaugural E-Mobility Expo, organized by Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) at the Kiira Vehicle Plant in Jinja. Under the theme “The Future is Green; The Future is Now,” this pivotal event aims to explore, showcase, and promote the adoption of electric mobility solutions in Uganda.
The Kiira Vehicle Open House and E-Mobility Expo 2024 is set to draw approximately 200 industry leaders, potential customers, suppliers, policymakers, investors, and the public. The goal is to evaluate Uganda’s readiness for the e-mobility revolution and position the nation as a key player in Africa’s electric vehicle market.
This expo represents a significant milestone in Uganda’s journey toward electric mobility, promising to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint and unlock new economic opportunities. Paul Musasizi, CEO of Kiira Motors Corporation, emphasizes the event’s importance: “This exhibition is a crucial step in Uganda’s transition to electric mobility, offering a cleaner, innovative future for our transportation sector.”
The Kiira Vehicle Plant symbolizes Uganda’s advancements in science, technology, and innovation. As a recognized vehicle manufacturer, Uganda is now licensed to issue Vehicle Identification Numbers, marking its growth in the automotive sector.
E-Mobility’s Impact on Uganda
Kampala, ranked as the 8th most polluted city in Africa, faces severe air quality issues, with mobility being a major contributor to pollution. E-mobility offers a sustainable solution to this problem, with electric vehicles (EVs) producing zero tailpipe emissions compared to conventional vehicles.
The transition to e-mobility is not only vital for reducing emissions but also for addressing public health concerns. The National Environment Management Authority reports that air pollution in Kampala is eight times higher than recommended levels, contributing to numerous health issues.
The Path Forward
E-mobility encompasses various clean transport technologies, including battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. As Uganda makes strides in this sector, the government’s National e-Mobility Strategy aims for a full transition to electric transport by 2030 for public and commercial vehicles, and by 2040 for passenger vehicles.
Kiira Motors has already produced 39 buses, including the Kayoola EVS, an all-electric bus with zero emissions, and the Kayoola Diesel Coach, which meets advanced emission standards. These innovations are leading the charge in promoting green mobility solutions.
Allan Muhumuza from the Mobility Bureau underscores the significance of the expo in advancing Uganda’s e-mobility vision, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to combat climate change and enhance quality of life.
